Mark Jamra, TypeCulture

Since the advent of the personal computer, typefaces—or "fonts"—have moved increasingly into the public consciousness and more people than ever before are making some of the typographic decisions which designers have made for decades. A look into one type designer's process reveals not only the optical and strategic considerations that go into the design of type, but also provides graphic designers and type users with a "behind-the-scenes" tour which can inform their own design process.

Presenter: Mark Jamra is a type designer, typographic consultant and associate professor at Maine College of Art. He has designed and produced typefaces for over 20 years and is the founder of TypeCulture, a digital type foundry and academic resource. Mark also designs books, creates documentary films and is a partner in a collective of communication designers in Portland, Maine. His lettering and typefaces have been in numerous exhibitions and have received recognition from the Type Directors Club and the Association Typographique Internationale.
